Why is Kenmore producing the 31150 in three different colors and models numbers if they are all the same exact machine? This same question applies to the next model down the bu1005 and 31140?
Kenmore already played a bit of dirty marketing by putting the same shell on the 31140/bu1005 but originally priced them $30 apart. I can surmise that the profit margin is much higher for the 31140/bu1005. It is only a conventional upright vacuum design with two motors and a belt drive for the brush head. Plus the 31140/bu1005 only has a 10 amp conventional motor compared to the 12 amp inducer motor on the 31150. So do not be fooled the two vacuums only look the same on the inside they are completely different.
The 31150/1017 and 1018 are superior vacuums in every way: cleaning power, reliability, durability and longevity. The 31150/1017/1018 have 3 motors. They have a unique soft plastic geared drive that never needs maintanence. The geared design and overload protector prevents anything from breaking if debris jams the vacuum.
The plastic gear teeth bend instead of breaking while the overload protector shuts down the vacuum to prevent damage to the roller motors.
Also since they have two motors at each end of the roller it reduces the workload on each motor and eliminates torque stress ( a major wear issue on conventional vacs). The primary motor in the 31150 is a 12 amp inducer motor which 20% more powerful than any other vacuum motor. The greater amperage combines with a push and pull fan to accelerate air flow meaning more cleaning power.
Really you get much more for your money with the 31150/1017/1018 compared to the 31140/1005. They are not even close in quality, power and longevity. Basically you get what you pay for. With the discontinued Hoover T series there is no other vacuum that can compare at the $300 -$400 price point.
