They are completely different. The DC39 is an canister vac, while the DC41 is a full size upright.

Suction Power:
DC41 has a suction power of 235 airwatts while DC39 has 275 airwatts.

Cleaner head:
DC39 features a Triggerhead tool that is the only turbine head controlled at the handle while DC41 has motorized brush bar.
Since DC39 is driven by the moving air and not motorized, it does not agitate the rugs/carpets much. But it does have great suction and does an good job on hard floors.

Cord Length: DC41 has a much longer cord.
