Hoover PowerDash vs Bissell TurboClean: similar and 2 of the best carpet cleaners for small apartment, homes, spaces, area rugs

If you have a small home, buying a compact size carpet shampooer will be a better option than getting a bulky one. Since it is lighter, smaller, easier to move around and requires less room to store. And it’s much cheaper.
When compared to little spot cleaners, the compact uprights handle the jobs better on cleaning a whole area rug. Because you do not have to knee down and use your hands to keep pressing the hand tool to scrub the rugs, and the hand tool usually is too small to clean an entire area rug, it takes much more time and effort than an upright.
So, for small areas, a compact rug shampooer is a better choice than a full size or a spot cleaner.

Then what’s the best carpet cleaner for small areas?
In fact, there are not so many good choices on the market. The Hoover PowerDash Pet and Bissell TurboClean PowerBrush Pet are two of the best ones out there, at least, above average. Though they are not perfect and do not clean as deeply as the full size ones, they do their jobs for their size and price.

Hoover PowerDash Pet vs Bissell TurboClean PowerBrush Pet, which is the best to buy?

images from Hoover and Bissell infomercials

These two machines has many similarities:

    • They are small upright carpet extractors.
    • Easy to put together.
    • Pretty lightweight, weigh less than 13 pounds. Some big ones weigh approximately 50 pounds, such as the Bissell Big Green 86T3.
    • Feature separate clean water tank and collection tank, and have a tank capacity of 0.5 gallons.
    • They do not have a separate detergent tank. You pour the detergent into the clean water tank.
    • The operation process is almost the same, you fill the clean water tank with warm water to the water line, then add detergent to the formula line. Squeeze the spray trigger for a slow forward and backward wet pass, then release the trigger to make one slow forward and backward dry stroke over the same spots.
    • Please note that both of them do not come with any attachments for cleaning upholstery, couches, or other above floor spots.
    • Both come with a trial size bottle of formula.
    • Have a 20-foot cable.
    • Easy to remove nozzle with no tool needed.
    • Need tools to remove screws to reach the brushes.
    • Carry one year limited warranty.
    • Similar price tag. Commonly the TurboClean costs approximately 100 dollars on official sites while the PowerDash costs approximately 110 dollars.

The Hoover PowerDash does not have any edge bristles.
    • Power Rating
      The Bissell TurboClean: 3.4 amps
The Hoover PowerDash: 7. 0 amps
    • Maintenance
Both require tool to remove screws to clean the brushes and brush compartment. However, the Hoover PowerDash takes more effort to clean up, it has like 5 to 6 screws to remove while the Bissell TurboClean PowerBrush Pet has only one screw to remove, and the Hoover brush compartment is also harder to clean.
    • Performance
They both do the jobs. The cleaning results at the same level, no significant difference.

The main thing that may affect your buying decision is the Hoover PowerDash Pet requires a bit more work to clean up after each use than the Bissell TurboClean PowerBrush Pet.

Some more information about these 2 shampooers:

    • Do the Bissell TurboClean PowerBrush Pet and Hoover PowerDash Pet vacuum as well as wash the carpet?
No. They are not vacuum cleaner, it is recommended to use a traditional vacuum cleaner to vacuum thoroughly before using them to wash carpet, especially if you have pet hair and human hair to pick up. • Do they steam?
      No.
    • Do you need to pre-treat the stains if using them to wash carpets?
Always recommended. You will get better results.

The Bissell 1986 is engineered with pet owners in mind, for homes with cleaning needs like eliminating dog and cat accident stains, odors, cleaning dog diarrhea from carpet, etc.
It has separate 1 gallon clean water tank and dirty water tank, but no detergent tank. You have to mix the clean water with detergent before cleaning. There are lines on the tank to help you pour into the right amount of formula. It has 2 buttons for spraying, a hand control one for general cleaning and a foot control one for pretreating stains. To get best cleaning performance, it is recommended to clean in Deep Clean Mode, but not for delicate carpet or area rugs. To regularly and quickly clean the surfaces, select the Express Cleaning Mode, it gets carpet dry faster. But you should always check with your carpet/rug manufacturer for their recommended cleaning method before selecting the cleaning mode.
This Bissell carpet shampooer can also be used to clean hard floors. However, it is not designed for hard floor cleaning, and it requires a Bare Floor Tool which is sold separately to clean hard floor.
This machine comes with a 2-in-1 Pet Upholstery Tool for dry vacuuming and wet washing, including removing pet hair, stains and odors off couches, upholstered chairs,sofa,etc..

No, it doesn’t. You should use hot tap water.
  • Does it have a heater to help dry the carpet?

No. This is not a dry vacuum but a carpet washer. You should vacuum before using this machine.
  • Can this carpet scrubber be used on wool carpet?
Always check manufacturer’s tag before cleaning.
If no tag, it is not recommended to use the deep clean mode for cleaning delicate, silk, wool, antique or area rugs.

This is a carpet washer, not a vacuum cleaner, so you should not move it as fast as a vacuum. You should move it slower to avoid leaving excess water on the carpet or rugs.
All parts should be dried thoroughly before storing. Some users suggest holding down the spray button to release any remaining solution inside the parts of the machine could help avoid mildew odor.
To only rinse carpet, use only water without mixing with formula.

    images from Hoover infomercial

For Hoover SmartWash, this machine is the simplest one to use. It does not require you to mix solution, you do not need to press any trigger to spray solution during the cleaning process. It has separate clean water tank and solution tank, it automatically mixes water with detergent, and dispense onto carpet. What you need to do is push it forward, and pull backward to wash and dry the carpet. It also comes with a hose and hand tool to remove pet messes from upholstery, stairs, couches, etc.
There is also a Pet version of the SmartWash. It has brushes that resist pet odor and antimicrobial pet tool for above floor cleaning.
And it features a removable handle which has a built-in detergent bottle, you can remove the handle to pre-treat those old pet stains and stubborn spots.

If you live in a small home, the above big size carpet extractors may not fit your needs. What you need is a compact machine that is smaller and takes up less space. However, smaller size machines are not as powerful as the big ones, and they do not clean as thoroughly as the big guys. If you are interested in buying a small one, you can have a look at the Hoover PowerDash and Bissell TurboClean.
